de Latine vulgaris, concerning vulgar Latin

Saluete,

Nescio cur me intersit set pono semper res uulgi interesse me plus quam res electorum.

  • Graffiti written in vulgar Latin at Pompeii.

Aliquis legistisne hanc?

    English Translation:
Recently I have become interested in Vulgar Latin which is the language that the common people of the Roman empire spoke. Moreover, it is the direct ancestor of French, Spanish, Italian..etc, as opposed to the classical Language of Cicero. I don't know why it has interested me so much but I suppose that I have always been more interested in the affairs of average people rather than the elites in history. Today I went to the library to see what books written in the vulgar tongue I might find. However, there are very few examples surviving of vulgar Latin.

Yesterday, I learned about one author who does provide some glimpse at what the language might have sounded like. This was the reason I decided to go the library today. He was a playright and the book I choose is called the "Cena Trimalchionis". Has anyone out there read it yet?
